Career Talks

From June to August 2023, the Global Studies program will host a series of online career talks with GSP alumni of past cohorts. The “Career Talks” series will have a range of guest speakers from a variety of fields who will share their professional experiences. After each talk there will be time for questions. The talks are open to anyone who is interested.

The Career Talks will take place every Thursday between 4.15 p.m. and 6 p.m. CET.

We are grateful that this talks series has been funded by the "Studierendenvorschlagsbudget" of the University of Freiburg.



In order to attend the event, please register with the Global Studies Office at . In the email, please provide your first and last name, whether you are a student, your university and study program (if applicable). You only need to register once and you will then receive the Zoom link for all eight talks.

Christopher Swader 

Current Role: Associate Professor of Sociology at Lund University

After graduation, Christopher went on to do a PhD at Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences and also held a postdoc role there.

He started working as assistant professor at Higher School of Economics in Russia, but left that post following the annexation of Crimea which led him to his current role at Lund University.


Amna Syed

Current Role: United Nations Gender Officer for the Development Program Pakistan

Amna first joined UN Women as a Project Officer Disability and went on to work for multiple government organizations in different roles for example as a Human Rights Reporting Expert for the United Nations Development Program.

Her current project SELP (Strengthening Electoral and Legislative Processes)  works to enhance democracy by supporting free and fair elections, and ensure greater political participation and inclusion for vulnerable and marginalised groups.

Lisen Wirén

Current Role: Program manager for IKEA social entrepreneurship.

Lisen has worked on the topics of sustainability and social impact for the past 15+ years, both in the private sector and in NGOs.

She has worked and lived in different countries including Germany, Argentina, India, Thailand, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden and Guatemala.


Carlo Angerer

Current Role: Multimedia Reporter and Producer for NBC News based in Germany

After graduation, Carlo worked as a freelance journalist  for several news organizations in Germany including ZDF and Reuters.

Since 2014, he is part of the staff at NBC News based in Germany covering stories around the world for an American audience on a range of topics.


Derya Bischoff

Current role: Adviser with Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Ghana on the topic of promotion of e-commerce in Africa.

After graduation in 2017, Derya started her career with GIZ by working for them in India on a “women economic empowerment” project. 


Sofia Saeed (Business, Consultant at GFA Consulting group) 

Current role: Project Manager at the GFA Consulting group

After graduating  in 2019, Sofia started working in development cooperation in Germany.
At GFA, she currently manages two projects to facilitate international trade, one with the EU and one with the GIZ.


Maija Käle

Current Role: Adviser for the Nordic Council of Minister's Office in Latvia on the topics of sustainability, digitization, and food systems.

After graduation in 2005, she founded an NGO "Development Bulb" where she worked with development cooperation projects with Georgia, Belarus, and other countries.

PhD studies at the Faculty of Computing, University of Latvia, with a focus on big data and food systems
